What’s Your Score Out of 4?

Assalamu’alaikum everyone 🙂

Here’s a test for all Muslims to put themselves through. 4 qualities will be mentioned later in this post, and the fewer qualities we have, the better…

There are 2 types of hypocrisy:

1. اِعْتِقَادِيٌّ aka النِّفَاقُ الأكْبَر : major hypocrisy, which is hypocrisy pertaining to belief

2. عَمَلِيٌّ aka النِّفَاقُ الأصْغَر : minor hypocrisy, which is hypocrisy pertaining to deeds and actions

Major hypocrisy is of 6 kinds:

i. Belying the Messenger صلى الله عليه و سلم completely

One who does this rejects him completely, even though he may pretend otherwise.

ii. Denying some things the Messenger صلى الله عليه و سلم brought from Allah

One who does this picks and chooses what he likes from the Deen.

The Deen is not a shopping centre! If someone denies 1 aspect of the sunnah, he has left Islam and has become a hypocrite!

iii. Hating the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم

Some people say that he’s just a regular man and we should just focus on the Qur’an that has been revealed to him.

iv. Hating some of the things the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم brought from Allah

Some reject his صلى الله عليه و سلم  actions by rejecting the sahih ahadith that conflict with the Islam they are trying to portray >>> Some da’ees (du’aat) do this because they want to portray a version of Islam that is all “peace”.

v. Rejoicing when His Deen is struggling

Some find it entertaining that the Muslims are sufferring!

vi. Disliking that His Deen prevails

This is quite self-explanatory.

Hypocrisy is a serious crime which is actually worse than mere kufr (disbelief), because it causes more damage…

“So by your Lord, We will surely gather them and the devils; then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees. Then We will surely extract from every sect those of them who were worst against the Most Merciful in insolence.”

Surah Maryam Ayaat 68-69

“Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire – and never will you find for them a helper -“

Surah An-Nisa’ Ayah 145

The lower the level of Hell, the more severe is the punishment. Above all the hypocrites would even be all those clear disbelievers like the idol worshippers!

Allah also tells us that the hypocrites are always planning deceit and plots. Even though outwardly they appear to be with the believers, inwardly they are with the kuffaar…

“(They are) swaying between this and that, belonging neither to these nor to those, and he whom Allah sends astray, you will not find for him a way (to the truth – Islam).”

Surah An-Nisa’ Ayah 143

The hypocrites are able to please both sides, the believers and the kuffaar.

It’s interesting to know that the word “hypocrisy” in Arabic, نِفَاق , comes from the word نَفَق , which means “tunnel”. At one end of the tunnel are the believers and at the other end are the disbelievers. The hypocrites continuously go from one end of the tunnel to the other!

Here are some ayaat in which Allah talks about the hypocrites…

“And when it is said to them, “Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,” you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion.”

Surah An-Nisa’ Ayah 61

The hypocrites turn away from those who call to the Deen while defaming them, speaking against them, and attacking them. They just have to make it a big deal when you call them to something they don’t like, they can’t just keep quiet and walk away.

‘And when it is said to them (hypocrites): “Believe as the people (followers of Muhammad Peace be upon him , Al-Ansar and Al-Muhajirun) have believed,” they say: “Shall we believe as the fools have believed?” Verily, they are the fools, but they know not.’

Surah Al-Baqarah Ayah 13

And when they meet those who believe, they say, “We believe”; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, “Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers.” [But] Allah mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression [while] they wander ‘blindly.”

Surah Al-Baqarah Ayaat 14-15

Characteristics of the hypocrites:

Among the characteristics is that they have enmity and envy towards the believers

If good touches you, it distresses them; but if harm strikes you, they rejoice at it. And if you are patient and fear Allah , their plot will not harm you at all. Indeed, Allah is encompassing of what they do.

Surah ‘Ali ‘Imran Ayah 120

Among the characteristics of the hypocrites is that they make a mockery of Allah, His Messenger  صلى الله عليه و سلم and His Deen

If you ask them (about this), they declare: “We were only talking idly and joking.” Say: “Was it at Allah, and His Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger  صلى الله عليه و سلم that you were mocking?”

Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after you had believed. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you because they were Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.).

Surah At-Tawbah Ayaat 65-66

Allah declares their apostasy upon making fun of the sunnah! Those who make fun of the beard, thobe, khimar, jilbab etc better watch it…

Another characteristic of the hypocrites is that they are known to spread mischief on the land

And when it is said to them, “Do not cause corruption on the earth,” they say: “We are only peacemakers.” Verily! They are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not.

Surah Al-Baqarah Ayaat 11-12

The sahaba رضي الله عنهم were very worried about falling into hypocrisy. Handhalah رضي الله عنه reports in a hadith in Sahih Muslim,

I met Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) he said: “How are you O Hanzalah?” I said, “Hanzalah has become a hypocrite“. He said, “Far removed is Allah from every imperfection, what are you saying?” I said, “When we are in the company of Messenger of Allah  صلى الله عليه و سلم and he reminds us of Hell-fire and Jannah, we feel as if we are seeing them with our very eyes, and when we are away from Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه و سلم, we attend to our wives, our children, our business, most of these things (pertaining to life hereafter) slip out of our minds.” Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) said, “By Allah, I also experience the same thing”. So Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) and I went to Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه و سلم and I said to him, “O Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه و سلم, Hanzalah has turned hypocrite.” Thereupon Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “What has happened to you?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, when we are in your company, and are reminded of Hell-fire and Jannah, we feel as if we are seeing them with our own eyes, but when we go away from you and attend to our wives, children and business, much of these things go out of our minds.” Thereupon Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “By Him in Whose Hand is my life if your state of mind remains the same as it is in my presence and you are always busy in remembrance (of Allah), the angels will shake hands with you in your beds and in your roads; but Hanzalah, time should be devoted (to the worldly affairs) and time should be devoted (to prayer)“. He (the Prophet  صلى الله عليه و سلم) said this thrice.

Riyadhus-Saaliheen,Book 1, Hadith 151

If the sahabah were that worried, we all should be extremely worried 😦

Someone once asked Imam Ahmad: Can anyone not worry about nifaaq (hypocrisy)?

He replied: It is abnormal for you not to worry, you should worry about this around the clock.

Inshaa’Allah none of us are guilty of major hypocrisy, but what about minor hypocrisy?

Now here comes the litmus test for all of us to test our levels of faith…

‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘as (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah  صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “Four are the qualities which, when found in a person, make him a sheer hypocrite, and one who possesses one of them, possesses one characteristic of hypocrisy until he abandons it. These are: When he is entrusted with something, he betrays trust; when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he acts treacherously; and when he argues, he behaves in a very imprudent, insulting manner.
Riyadhus-Saaliheen, Book of Good Manners (agreed upon hadith)

In Sahih Muslim, the Prophet  صلى الله عليه و سلم said that a hypocrite can still be one who fasts, prays and declares that he is a Muslim!

“Three are the signs of a hypocrite, even if he observed fast and prayed and asserted that he was a Muslim.”

Book 1, Hadith 119

Lying is something we need to be extremely cautious about. In our daily lives we can see the countless problems hiding/bending/changing the truth can bring about. The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم says about lying in a scary hadith…

Abdullah bin Mas’ud narrated that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه و سلم  said:
“Abide by truthfulness. For indeed truthfulness leads to righteousness. And indeed righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues telling the truth and trying hard to tell he truth until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful person. Refrain from falsehood. For indeed falsehood leads to the wickedness, and wickedness leads to Fire. A slave (of Allah) continues lying and trying hard to lie, until he is recorded with Allah as a liar.”
Sahih Jami’ At-Tirmidhi Vol. 4, Book 1, Hadith 1971
How does a hypocrite break his promise?
He either tells you OK he will do such and such, while at the moment he knows that he is not going to do that
After he gives you his word and initially he had the determination to fulfill it, he changes his mind and breaks his promise.
A hypocrite goes to salah in a state of laziness…
Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salat (the prayer), they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allah but little.
Surah An-Nisa’ Ayah 142
Allah says about the hypocrites…
And We will turn away their hearts and their eyes just as they refused to believe in it the first time. And We will leave them in their transgression, wandering blindly.
Surah Al-An’am Ayah 110
So which of the four qualities do we have? 😦
